Qatar Sustainability Network successfully launched to enhance research and sustainability

24 October 2012

A major reflection of Qatar’s investment in and commitment to the environment took concrete form when the Qatar Sustainability Network (QSN) was successfully launched today.

Several leading Qatari stakeholders have committed to establish the network to collectively enhance the culture of research, science and sustainability through active public engagement.

As a contribution to Qatar’s 2030 Vision and the Qatar National Research Strategy, QSN will promote collaborations amongst the public, private, research, academic and NGOs to become a leader in sustainable development and research. The network aims to inspire, inform, empower, educate and build capacity and involvement to improve the quality of life of future generations in Qatar and become an active platform to advance the science-based sustainability agenda in Qatar and beyond.

During COP18, QSN will be the focal point for all Arab NGOs and actively lobby and advise on developments of the global climate change debate.

Dr. Rabi Mohtar, Director of the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) commented:  “The new initiative highlights the importance of conservation and sustainability we are faced with here in Qatar and encourages collaborations and increased awareness of the role of science outreach among the community through the dissemination of science-based information.”

Mr Fahad Al Attiya, the chairman of the Qatar National Food Security Programme Chairman of the Organizing Sub-Committee for COP18/CMP8 Doha stated:  “We are delighted that Qatar is at the forefront of sustainability outreach plans in region. This latest initiative will demonstrate the country’s commitment to leading a sustained quality of life for future generations and advance the culture of research in Qatar with its international partners.”

To reflect the joint efforts from multiple institutions, the interim management board of QNS consists of representatives from QEERI, Doha Oasis Group, ECO-Q, QScience, Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Qatar and Qatar National Food Security Program. These representatives are, respectively, Nadia Amar Aboul Hosn, Noor Al Thani, Qasim Radaideh, Arend Kuster, Fatma Al Manai, Dr. Peter Bowman and Andrew Armentano.

The outcomes of QNS may include science-based knowledge to support better decisions and policy making, awareness and education programs and events, whitepapers, local case studies and community based programs, public engagement assessment, therefore improving the understanding of environmental and energy-related issues.
