Abstract

Energy efficient wireless communication networks become essential due to the associated environmental and financial benefits. Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising candidate to reach energy efficient communications. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been introduced as energy efficient light sources and their light signal intensity can be modulated to transfer data wirelessly. As a result, VLC using LEDs can be considered an energy efficient solution that exploits the illumination energy, which is already consumed, in data transmission. We set up a fully operative VLC system testbed composed of both the optical transmitters and receivers. We use this system in testing the performance of VLC communication systems. In this work, we discuss the results obtained by running the experiment using different system parameters. We apply different signaling schemes for the LED transmitter including optical orthogonal frequency division modulation (O-OFDM). We also validate our previously obtained analytical results for applying power control in VLC cooperative networks.
