oa Megatrends report on urbanization and migration in the context of family
Abstract
This report brings together research published between 2019 and 2024 to explore how urbanization and migration influence families—and how family structures, roles, and relationships, in turn, shape these processes across different contexts. Using the UNDESA (2022) report as a baseline and a rapid review approach, it draws on academic studies, policy papers, government reports, and evaluations to highlight key trends, emerging issues, and policy examples.
The report identifies six main areas for action: family-friendly policies; gender-responsive and child-sensitive legislation; affordable housing and inclusive infrastructure; comprehensive urban planning; sustainable urban growth supported by effective family planning; and accessible healthcare for immigrants. It emphasizes the need for ongoing, region-specific research and continued collaboration among policymakers, researchers, and communities to support inclusive and family-centered development.
