John Taylor surveys the political history of Islam from the time of the great Muslim empires to modern days. He argues that the definition of caliphate need not only to be measured in terms of central political power and empire but, as increasing numbers of thinkers and writers had been urging for several centuries, in terms of the responsibility, delegated from God to humanity, for moral authority and good government, for demonstration of spirituality, for resistance to injustice and for promotion of ethical values. There is therefore much more for us to learn from the political history of Islam than the story of the rise and fall of its Empires.
