FIGURE 4.7 The past-to-present transitionary period for Dammam is identified from the end of the 1940s to 1960. In general, the modernization of the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia, where the coastal city of Dammam is located, coincided with oil exploration and the development of oil-related industries. Following the discovery of oil in 1935 in Dammam, the city entered a major transformational phase in the 1940s and 1950s. The first oil refineries started to operate in 1945, and, in 1947, the city saw its first urban master plan. The King Abdulaziz Port opened in 1949 and was substantially expanded in the early 1950s. The city grew significantly during the 1950s to accommodate the oil-related workforce, eventually doubling in size within 10 years. The permanent population of Dammam grew 24 times since the discovery of oil, increasing from 1,500 inhabitants in 1935 to 35,000 inhabitants in 1960.
