Abstract

The research aimed to fill the knowledge gap in entomological studies in the arid and semi-arid regions of Guelmim-Oued Noun, where beetles (Coleoptera) remain under-documented, despite their ecological importance as indicators of ecosystem health. A comprehensive field study was carried out in four regions that represent the ecological diversity of the region: Assa-Zag, Guelmim, Tantan, and Sidi Ifni, relying on a set of integrated collection techniques, including pitfall traps, hand nets, bush beating, and direct hand collection, to ensure a comprehensive representation of different species by habitat and activity. The results resulted in the collection of 316 individuals representing 84 species across 11 families of the order Coleoptera. The family Tenebrionidae was the most represented and widespread in most sites, reflecting their high adaptability to arid and semi-arid climates, due to their physiological and behavioral characteristics that enable them to survive in water- and plant-poor environments. The biogeographic analysis showed that species of Mediterranean origin dominated the recorded species, while endemic species accounted for an important percentage of 9% of the total species, highlighting the biological and ecological importance of these areas. By analyzing the hierarchical classification of the studied sites, five main clusters were found in terms of similarity of beetle community composition, where local climatic conditions, such as temperature and humidity, played a crucial role in the distribution of these communities. These results are in line with what has been observed in other Moroccan regions, where the close relationship between beetle diversity and the structure of habitats and vegetation has been highlighted, emphasizing the importance of these environments in hosting a biodiversity that is often neglected in dry areas.
